make yourself comfortable while I put this away and check my machine.” “Your machine? Do you mean your automobile?”
She shook her head. “My answering machine. On second thought, why don’t you come with me and see for yourself. After a plane trip, this is going to seem minor.”
Less than five minutes later, in Kris’s small library, Sean looked up from the metallic box. “This is amazing, Kristine. Do you mean to say that people can communicate all over the world with this? And you don’t even have to be home to receive the messages?”
Nodding, Kris felt the pleasure of his discovery and her grin widened. “Would you like to try it out? We can call Danielle’s machine.”
All she needed to see was his answering smile. Kris called out the phone numbers to him and she watched as his expression changed to amazement when he heard Danielle’s message. Taking the receiver from him she said into it, “It’s just me, Danni. 1 wanted to let you know I got home safely, and I’ll call you in a few days. Take care….
She replaced the receiver and looked up at him. “There’s a lot to learn, Sean. Almost everything’s different now.” “It must have been very hard for you, Kristine … in my time. You left behind so many wonders.”

She stared at his mouth, the shadow of his beard under his cheekbones, the emotion revealed in the expression of his eyes. “I don’t know about that, Sean. Your time is so uncomplicated-so much simpler.”
Neither said anything. They continued to stare at each other, thinking private thoughts. Finally, Kris cleared her throat. “We both should get some rest, a few hours’ sleep. The naps on the plane don’t count.”
Sean nodded and stood up. “That way,” Kris continued, “we can make some definite plans this afternoon. After we’ve rested.” Why did she suddenly feel like a young schoolgirl?
Again Sean nodded, looking more uncomfortable. “Where would you like me to sleep,” he finally asked when she didn’t volunteer that information.
Kris’s mouth went dry and she swallowed several times before answering. “That’s right. I’m sorry. I should have told you.” She hurried to the couch in the back of him. “This … this thing opens up into a bed,” she mumbled, while throwing cushions onto the library rug. “Since there’s only the one bedroorn; I got it for overnight guests.” Thank God, Kris silently added.
Sean quickly lent a hand, again marveling at yet another discovery. “A bed inside a sofa! Amazing! Very ingenious.”
Kris straightened and backed out of the room.
